Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center and Pioneer Career Center hosted a Legislative Breakfast at Mid-Ohio Conference Center recently.  Representatives Mark Romanchuk and Margaret Ann Ruhl shared legislative updates and responded to questions.

SLO—or Student Learning Objectives—follow-up sessions continue this month at Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center. Teachers are collaborating in grade- or content-level meetings to create assessments.

As part of federal Race to the Top grants, 60 area superintendents and administrators participated in IIS, instructional improvement system, training recently at Mid-Ohio ESC. This powerful online learning platform features access to curriculum and standards, testing options, data analysis and student portfolios.

As part of a unit on “Community Helpers,” students at the Mid-Ohio ESC Preschool in Mansfield got an up close and personal look at a fire truck, ambulance  and police car.

More than 50 Administrative Assistants, who work in area school districts, were recognized at a program and luncheon sponsored last week by Mid-Ohio ESC.  Partners   on the Planning Committee include Glenna Cannon, Superintendent of Pioneer Career and Technology Center; Lisa Carmichael, Superintendent of Ontario Local Schools; and Tara Meyerink, Superintendent, Buckeye Central Local Schools.

Paul Stellar, Director of Professional Development Services for Ashland University at the Stark Campus was the keynote speaker.  Participants will also heard from Adam Gongwer, Ontario Police Officer; Cheryl Cronbaugh, Mid-Ohio ESC Instructional Technology Director and Elise Voutsaras, SERS representative.     A number of local vendors displayed their products.

Our target audience is school administrators, principals, assistant principals, risk managers, school board members, school safety coordinators (resource officers), transportation and food service coordinators, facility managers/building engineers, nurses, counselors, public information officers, teachers, and local emergency managers and first responders (law enforcement, fire, etc.) who are interested in comprehensive emergency planning for grades K-12.

Mid-Ohio ESC Preschool is hosting free developmental screenings for any three, four or five-year-old child living in Richland County.  Screenings will be held on Friday, May 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Mid-Ohio ESC Preschool, located at 890 W. Fourth Street in Mansfield.

The screenings assess cognition, language, physical/fine motor and social/emotional skills in order to determine a child’s readiness for preschool.

All teachers who participated in the initial SLO (Student Learning Objective) training are encouraged to attend a three-hour, follow-up session.  Session dates and times are listed at www.moesc.net.  Click on the link “Register for Events” to take you to the NEW Professional Development Calendar.

At these workshops, attendees will collaborate with area teachers in specific content or grade levels to develop two to four SLOs.  As part of the new teacher evaluation system, Ohio teachers will develop SLOs—measurable long-term growth targets—for all their students.  Facilitators who have created SLOs using state-designed tools and a scoring process will be on hand to assist.
