Congratulations to top speller Maggie Sheridan!

Middle School Winner and Jennifer Pennell

Maggie Sheridan, Mid-Ohio ESC’s top speller, was one of only 40 students who advanced to the final round of the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 1.

A seventh grader at Lexington Junior High School, Maggie made the national television news and websites with her happy smile and enthusiastic reaction to correctly spelling the word “whirlicote,” which means a heavy and luxurious carriage.

Although she went down in Round 5 after missing the word “saccharomyces,” a kind of fungus, Maggie started the day number 17 out of 40.  The bee opened with 291 spellers and Maggie made it through two rounds of on-stage spelling and then passed a written spelling and vocabulary test.
