Elementary School Academic Challenge winners named

Fifty-six teams from elementary schools in Ashland, Crawford, Morrow, Richland, and Wayne counties recently participated in the Winter Elementary School Academic Challenge Tournaments sponsored by and held at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center.

Schools participating included Ashland Christian, Colonel Crawford, Crestview, Crestline, Foundation Academy, Galion, Lexington, Mansfield City, Mt. Gilead, Northwestern, Shelby City, St. Mary’s (Mansfield), St. Peter’s and Wooster.

Winning fifth grade team members from Lexington included Scott Bartlett, Grant Mentzer, Jacob Halfhill, and Wyatt Miller. Fifth grade runner up team members from Wooster included Aubrey Hemming, Isabelle Castelluci, Soren Veney, and Allison Snyder.

Fourth grade winning team members from Parkview Elementary in Wooster included Megan Kleinhenz, Owen Buchholz, Cole Kumza and Lauren Hershberger. Fourth grade runner up team members from Ashland Christian included Averi Bessemer, Logan Frazer, Aunya Bessemer and Alyssa Deer.

Elementary school students in grade 4 will compete in the Academic Challenge again on Thursday, March 20. There will be a final tournament on May 15. Fifth grade teams compete March 21 with a final tournament on May 16. Sixth grade teams compete on February 13, March 27 and May 15. Seventh and eighth grade teams compete February 14, March 28 and May 16. Final high school tournaments will be held on March 3. All the events are held at Mid-Ohio ESC.
