High School, Junior Varsity Academic Challenge winners named

High school and Junior Varsity teams recently participated in the Winter High School Academic Challenge Tournaments sponsored by and held at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center.

Schools participating included Ashland, Bucyrus, Colonel Crawford, Crestview, Galion, Highland, Hillsdale, Lexington, Madison, Mansfield Christian, Mansfield City, Mapleton, Mt. Vernon, Ontario, Plymouth-Shiloh, Shelby, St. Peter’s, and Tiffin.

One Varsity bracket was composed of districts that have already qualified for the Ohio Academic Competition by winning a previous tournament during the year.  Ashland, Lexington, Mt. Vernon, Ontario, St. Peter’s and Tiffin all competed in this bracket.  Mt. Vernon won a close final match to take the trophy from these teams.  Members of this team included Greg Gillen, Alula Hansen, Nicole Steady, and Joseph Higginbotham.

Two remaining Varsity brackets were composed of those teams still looking for a bid to the Ohio Academic Competition.  Highland and Mansfield Christian won each of the brackets, thus qualifying for the Ohio Academic Competition, and played a very close match to determine the tournament winner.  Mansfield Christian took the championship.  Members of that team included Tim Dials, Meghan Robertson, Ryan Pfeiffer, Joel Golias, Isaiah Jarvis and Kezia Namenyi.

Mt. Vernon School boasted the overall Junior Varsity winners.  Team members included Jacob Lebold, Malcolm MacDonell, Hanna Hyde, Mary harris, Luke Trese, and Kyle Boucher.  Runner up in the JV brackets was Hillsdale.

This was the final local competition for the academic year for the high school teams.
