Mid-Ohio ESC to Host Statewide Think Tank to Address Ohio’s School-Based Workforce Shortages

Mansfield, OH (November 6, 2025) – Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center (ESC) will host a Statewide SLP & School Psychology Think Tank, a collaborative event designed to address the critical shortage of school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and school psychologists across Ohio, on November 10 from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Organized in partnership with the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce's State Regional Consultant Team for Speech-Language Pathology and School Psychology, the Think Tank brings together educational leaders, university partners and professional associations to identify innovative solutions for recruitment, retention and workforce development.

“The need for highly qualified SLPs and school psychologists in our districts is absolutely critical, and it directly impacts the comprehensive services we provide to districts and their students,” said Eric Turlo, Director of Student Services. “By convening leaders from across the state, we are taking a crucial step to move beyond simply identifying the problem and instead focusing on workable strategies that will help stabilize and hopefully grow this essential workforce for the future.”

The November 10 session marks the first in a three-part series scheduled throughout the 2025-26 school year. Participants include representatives from Ohio universities, Educational Service Centers, the Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board, the Ohio School Psychologists Association (OSPA) and the Ohio School Speech Pathology Educational Audiology Coalition (OSSPEAC).

“Hosting this event allows Mid-Ohio ESC to serve as a hub for meaningful collaboration,” said Johanna Gilland, Central OH Regional SLP Consultant and Mid-Ohio employee. “Together, we are developing practical strategies that support both the quality of comprehensive evaluations and the sustainability of Ohio’s school-based workforce.”

Kylie Dennison-Rebon, Central Ohio Regional School Psychology Consultant, shared her enthusiasm for the initiative: “This Think Tank reflects the power of statewide collaboration. Each of Ohio’s regional consultant teams contributed to the design and direction of this work, ensuring the collective expertise of both the speech-language pathology and school psychology fields is represented. We are thrilled to expand this effort to include school psychology. Ultimately, every conversation and solution developed through this work keeps student achievement and success at the forefront of what we do, reminding us that building and sustaining a strong workforce directly impacts the quality of support our students receive.”

The Think Tank aligns directly with the goals outlined in the FY26 Regional Consultant Scope of Work, supporting comprehensive and compliant evaluations by ensuring districts have access to a stable, highly qualified workforce. Future Think Tank sessions are scheduled for February 2, 2026 and April 7, 2026.

MOESC Board of Governors Tours Abraxas, Mid-Ohio Adult Education Program & F.I.R.S.T. School

Mansfield, OH (October 16, 2025) – Following its October 15, 2025 Regular Board Meeting, the MOESC Board of Governors toured Abraxas, Mid-Ohio Adult Education Program and F.I.R.S.T. School. Mid-Ohio ESC provides the educational programming at the two private residential educational facilities (Abraxas and F.I.R.S.T. School) and serves as the fiscal agent for the Mid-Ohio Adult Education Program. Touring these sites gives board members an opportunity to see firsthand the impact of the services Mid-Ohio ESC provides and how its programs support learners of all ages across the region.

During their visit to Abraxas School of Ohio, the Board was able to observe teachers interacting with students. Principal Jolene Edwards said, "It's always nice to have our Board visit or get to inform them of the happenings here at Abraxas." Matt Porter, Program Manager for the Abraxas Facility was in the school and helped to answer some questions the board had. The board members were informed of the upgrades that have been made to the school over the last few years, which include office desks, teacher desks and chairs, new monitors for teachers, student tables and chairs, SmartBoards for every classroom and new student Chromebooks. Abraxas School of Ohio appreciates the support that the Board continuously provides.

While visiting the Mid-Ohio Adult Education Program, the Board toured the facility and observed GED and WorkKeys class preparation in action. Program Director Andie Karpiak-Feasel provided a presentation highlighting how the program is funded, the wide range of services offered and the impact of community partnerships. She discussed how adults are prepared at New Beginnings with workplace readiness skills, how students are supported at the Crawford Success Center as they work toward their GED and how WorkKeys preparation works at Madison Adult Career Center and Pioneer Career & Technology Center for participants in the Adult Diploma Program. Additionally, the Mid-Ohio Adult Education Program offers WorkKeys preparation at Pioneer for students in the LPN program, ASVAB test preparation in collaboration with the Ohio Army National Guard and on-site ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes at Major Metals. The presentation concluded with a discussion of the program’s continued growth, achievements and the meaningful ways the Mid-Ohio Adult Education Program is helping adults across the region reach their educational and career goals.

“The continued support of the Mid Ohio School Board plays a critical role in the services and opportunities we are able to provide our students here at F.I.R.S.T. School,” said Principal Vanessa Wagner. During their visit, the board was able to learn about the structure of the programs, the impact grant money and their support has had on F.I.R.S.T. School’s ability to educate the students, as well as exposure to the different types of academic opportunities that are offered through the school. A few of the F.I.R.S.T. teachers were able to talk with the board about the structure of their classrooms, the technology used and how it is implemented throughout the curriculum, and the community partnerships the school and facility are a part of. “It was a pleasure being able to interact with all of the board members and to have them inside of the program. Having community members come into the school and experience the work being done is the best way to help build a strong bond,” she continued.

Mid-Ohio ESC Board President Doug Theaker reflected on the tours: “I believe this was an educational opportunity for the Board of Governors to see the programming and training provided to students at F.I.R.S.T., Mid-Ohio Adult Education Program and Abraxas. It is extremely important for the Board of Governors to visit our programs to know where and how we are spending taxpayers’ money to support the education of all students.”
