MOESC Hosts “My Child’s Rights to FAPE & A System for Organizing Records” Training

NEW DATE - Tuesday, March 3rd

The Parent Mentor program of Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center (MOESC) is pleased to invite all parents and guardians of children with special needs to this important event that will take place Tuesday, March 3rd  from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center, 890 W. Fourth St. Mansfield, Ohio. The topic of discussion will be My Child’s Rights to FAPE & A System for Organizing Records. MOESC Parent Mentors Cindy Wrobleski and Lindsey Schonauer will host this free event in collaboration with Sally Stigall, Richland County Parent Peer Support Specialist. Laryssa Betty, from the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities, will lead this informative meeting.

This make-it and take-it workshop will assist participants in organizing records and documentation that pertain to their child’s education and health needs. The special education system records eligibility, support, and services via many documents for a child with a disability. Getting ready for an Individualized Education Plan, or IEP, meeting can be overwhelming, and an IEP file is a great way to keep all of your child’s records organized and at the ready for when you may need to reference them. An IEP file can also help parents prepare for an IEP meeting and stay up to date on their child’s progress.

This training will also help parents understand what FAPE, or Free and Appropriate Public Education, is. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, FAPE is defined as an educational program that is individualized to a specific child, that meets that child's unique needs, provides access to the general curriculum, meets the grade-level standards established by the state, and from which the child receives educational benefit. Discussion of parents’ rights under IDEA 2004 and how to work with other agencies will be presented.
