PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT FACILITY PROGRAMS
Private Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) Programs include the Abraxas School and FIRST School, which are funded through the Ohio Department of Education Private Residential Treatment Facility Pilot Program to operate the academic program at two of the three PRTF sites: Abraxas, located east of Shelby and Foundations for Living, located west of Lucas. These programs are also supported through Title 1-D (Delinquent) funds administered by Mid-Ohio ESC. Mid-Ohio ESC partners with the residential treatment program administration and staff to deliver an educational program that meets the requirement of the Ohio Department of Education for students in correctional facilities.

Abraxas School Abraxas School serves up to 110 male students aged 13 to 21, who are primarily referred to Abraxas by the court or children’s services agency in their home county. Abraxas serves up to 100 students with drug and alcohol dependency or delinquency issues, and a maximum of 10 students in a behavioral health unit that is focused on rehabilitation of sex offenders. The average length of stay is 6-12 months, with some students in the behavioral health unit staying longer. Abraxas operates with a student to staff ratio that does not exceed 15:1. The school operates on a four-period block schedule that allows students to earn credit at an accelerated rate, which is of significant value in a school where many students are credit deficient. Abraxas offers a GED program and programming for students who have completed all requirements for graduation. Abraxas credits are recognized and accepted by the student’s home school, and students who complete graduation requirements while at Abraxas are awarded diplomas from their home school district. F.I.R.S.T SchoolFIRST school serves up to 80 female students ages 12-17, along with a small unit of 8-12 male students. Students are generally referred to Foundations for Living by social and children’s services agencies in their home counties and are often in the custody of these agencies, with acute mental health needs. The length of stay can be as long as 18 months. The school operates on a four-period block schedule that allows students to earn credit at an accelerated rate, which is of significant value in a school where many students are credit deficient. FIRST offers a GED program. FIRST credits are recognized and accepted by the student’s home school, and students who complete graduation requirements while at FIRST are awarded diplomas from their home school district. FIRST operates on a student to staff ratio not to exceed 15:1.
